The Devil Inside

The Devil Inside is a supernatural horror, based on real life events. The documentary style film made around $100million, despite the fact it launched no previews and quickly disappeared from the US box office top 10. The film was released on January 6, 2012 and directed by William Brent Bell and written by Matthew Peterman alongside Bell, and produced by Insurge Pictures hoping it would replicate the box office success Paranormal Activity.

In 1999, Isabella Rossi (played by Fernanda Andrade) takes a visit to an asylum in Rome, accompanied by a documentarian. The two are trying to uncover the truth about her mother Maria Rossi (Suzan Crowley), who ten years before murdered three people in an exorcism performed on her, and is believed to be possessed by the Devil. On their journey, the pair are introduced to two priests, Ben (Simon Quarterman) and David (Evan Helmuth) who accompany them and show them an exorcism on another woman named Rosalita (Bonnie Morgan). While trying to discover if the woman is mentally ill or possessed, she calls Isabella by her name, despite never being introduced. As the film continues we see Isabella speak to her mother for the first time since she was admitted into the asylum, and learn several pieces of vital information about her mother and her well-being.  Against the Catholic Church’s will, the priests perform and exorcism; does it go to plan?  We learn the answer to that question in the ending of the film, when we see how the characters react to what they’ve witnessed.

The film certainly scratches its audience head as they question if the footage is fictional or genuine. Its ending has been said to be like marmite – you either loved it or hated its use of cliff-hanger and abrupt cut to the end credits.
