Language Change Over Time - Task For Nina

Part 3

The 18th Century text shows lots of archaic language as well as very old sentence structures and language techniques. From the very beginning of the text we can see how much language has changed. Over time, the placing of the verbs in sentences has altered, as previously we can see that the verb was placed before the subject of the sentence, which now seems very “backwards” in modern day language. For example “At 7 came a coach from the Strand”, compared to the modern day “A 7 the coach came”. In addition, many of the words used in the previous article have now broadened, and their meanings extended to mean other things in addition to what they originally meant, or have developed a completely different meaning in general. An example of this is the word “Bonnet”. Originally, it was used to describe a sort of straw hat a lady or young girl would wear.
